While people question or are turned off by having a "big leader" shepherd them to a better tomorrow, instead of turning to each other, they have been sold the idea that they must turn within. Perhaps somewhat ironically, the hippies are partly to blame for this. The focus on individuality during the first generation psychedelic movement in the United States led to individual-ism as an ideal. As a result, dangerous cults of personality emerged and young people went searching for meaning/god/truth at a global free market buffet. Some ended up in highly regarded musical groups, while others ended up with Manson. Now getting the engine of the civil rights movement revved back up is tough, because people down know what to believe so they settle for what tickles them with enough dopamine to stay comfortable with a way of life they would probably openly admit is unsustainable People are ready to be (re)activated, but trust in existing institutions has all but disintegrated because they've been hijacked by corporate interests and run into the ground. Meanwhile, our social relationships are mediated by technology invented by people who won't even let their children use it.
