I want people to engage with the feelings of cognitive dissonance I know we have, to help people identify where those feelings of disconnection come from, and to work with others to offer tangible alternatives that meet people's social, intellectual, creative, and physical needs in ways that the individualistic, neoliberal status quo does not. I suspect that cultivating disgust or visceral and emotional discomfort/maladjustment/discontent/disenchantment with the current social design can be achieved through art, and this revulsion can catalyze movement and charge up fervent energy that may be channeled in the direction of civic engagement, demonstration, and active, creative democracy. Still working on the latter part. Can't do that alone! Right now, I believe my task is to generate a sense of something ominous yet compelling. Something with impressive imaginative force that challenges social boundaries but speaks to seldom expressed impulses and makes people wonder what they're capable of, how far they can push their own perceived limits and get away with it. But it cannot be so jarring that it only frightens or repulses people. There has to be "something about it" that allows people to sit with it for at least a moment and wonder what it means to them and why, even if the overall feeling is negative or confused. I hope this is empowering and encourages the development of clarity for participants in regard to their relationship to mediated experiences.
