I recognize that everyone has a unique set of abilities, and that cultural differences and diverse backgrounds contribute to the experience of every learner. My aim is to provide an inclusive atmosphere where every person feels significant, and knows that their contributions are important. Academia must reckon with a legacy of prejudice that informs the curricula for an increasingly diverse student body. As a professor, the onus is on me to stay well-informed, and to be eager to confront my own biases. In addition to doing research to ensure the materials I present are representative of a range of cultures and human experiences, I turn to students for input and discussion about how to make the class more reflective of those it exists to serve.
