Experiencing of a lack of agency and social ostracization due to inadequate social support systems and outlets for meaningful human connection and self-expression, school can feel like a void of dissociation in which people watch their bodies being slowly dragged through a desolate wasteland of servitude and listlessness. For many, this results in boiling repression that too often manifests as destructive tendencies, externalized as bullying and gun violence, and internalized as suicide, eating disorders, and other forms of self-harm. Without a feeling of control and autonomy over their own life and self-image, which should be nurtured rather than suppressed, it's not difficult to see how someone who is unwell could be pushed to the brink when they feel they have nowhere to go and no one to turn to. The over-prescription of powerful stimulants to children so they stay focused in school settings that aren't serving them, which some experts view as unethical and coercive, as well as the encouragement of excessive drinking on college and university campuses, can exacerbate mental health issues, addiction, and proneness to aggression.
